Style Made in the USA

We did some Spring spruce up this month including colorful flowers in my vintage pots, freshly painted red entrance door, handsome gray/blue shutters and the final pop of color, a Maine Float Rope door mat.

Maine Float Rope Mats

Maine Float Rope Mats

The Maine Float-Rope Company makes Down East Doormats that are designed and handmade on the coast of Maine using reclaimed lobster fisherman’s float-rope.  They are hand-woven by fishing families and others year round.  These super-durable mats, runners and area rugs are virtually indestructible. The vivid colors are so cheery at a front or back door, foyer, or a Summer home where fussy fabric rugs have no place.   Check out their website where you can order ready made color combinations or custom design your own!

Maine Heritage Weavers – Loomed to be Heirloomed!

When I was a little girl the highlight of each Summer entailed traveling to my Aunt Eunice’s lovely farm house in Easton, Maine.  I loved her blue ribbon vegetable garden; the way strangers gave a friendly wave from their cars passing by the farm house; and the soft Terry coverlets and bedspreads she had on all the beds.  The raised hobnail patterns and pom pom fringe gave each of her many bedrooms such a happy and welcoming feeling that to this day when I see a Terry bedspread I am immediately transported back to Summer in Maine.

I am super excited to tell you about my visit and tour of Maine Heritage Weavers in Monmouth, Maine where those Terry coverlets and bedspreads are still manufactured today along with Matelasse and classic woven bedspreads, coverlets and blankets!

This woven bedspread is a lovely pattern called Spectrum.

For years all the big designers have featured flag style design for their All American themes but rarely do they manufacture them in the USA. Well here is the Betsy Ross pattern in the Matelasse Collection made in Maine and so well designed. I love this! How about a few pillows made of recycled denim to complete the look.

Maine Heritage Weavers has a rich and interesting history.  It started out as the Bates Mills Manufacturing Company in 1883. It was established by Benjamin Bates (Bates College is named after him) in Lewiston, Maine as part of the thriving cotton textile industry in America.  During the Civil War Bates Mills worked full throttle producing duck fabrics for tenting.  After the war Bates Mills continued to produce hundreds of fabrics from damasks to gingham’s to cottons for myriad of household products.  During WW2 Bates Mills turned out vast quantities of nylon parachute cloths and camouflage cloth.  Bates Mills had many ingenious inventions and ideas including the matching bedspread/drapery sets very popular with college students for their dorm room decor.  Check out this vintage Bates advertisement in Vogue Magazine August 1948 with a very young George Bush Sr and Barbara Bush posing in a dorm at Yale University.

Bates Mills Advertisement

However, in the 1950’s Bates Mills started closing until there was just one mill remaining in 2002.  Fortunately the wise and industrious Mr. Fred Lebel who had worked for Bates Mills since 1961 and worked his way up to President of the company was determined to build up the business.  Mr Lebel located a large factory in Monmouth Maine, tracked down the looms and equipment and secured the proper funding to establish Maine Heritage Weavers.   Thanks to Mr Lebel, his family, and his family of employees those candlewick spreads, coverlets, and blankets continue to be made with pride, quality and are loomed to be heirloomed by the good people in Maine and Made with Style in the USA!

Made in USA – what I bought and what I gave….

Hello Everyone – to wrap up 2013 and in anticipation of bringing you lots of stylish Made in USA offerings for 2014, (I like that number don’t you?), here is a recap of some of the wonderful Made in the USA products that I purchased last year.  I have made it a habit to check out labels for USA made…now its just part of my shopping routine whether online or at the mall.  If it doesn’t say Made in the USA it probably isn’t.,sleigh of made in usa giftsI love Nanette Lepore women’s couture made in New York City.  Her fashions never disappoint year after year and I now even have pieces from 15 plus years ago that look fabulous and I get tons of compliments.  Last year I purchased this top in a chartreuse color.    I have the best luck with her sales…check it out:  Nanette Lepore

I also purchased a few casual pieces from the Alabama based Earth Creations.  They make organic cotton shirts and a complete casual wear line for women made from sustainable fibers.  I love the pieces I have including this bell sleeved cowl neck in black.

Earth Creations

Next up…some items I purchased as gifts:  Duluth Pack out of Duluth, Minnesota.  For over 130 years, Duluth Pack has been located in Duluth, MN. where they have been manufacturing high quality, built-to-last canvas and leather bags, packs, and outdoor gear in their century-old factory.  With their tag line of “Guaranteed for life and made in USA”…. you cant go wrong!  This all leather and spacious over sized dopp kit I gifted was a big hit:

The Goorin Brothers hat company makes most of their  stylish hats in the USA.  Many of my friends and family purchased several hats at Goorin Brothers last year.

FOR THE HOME...since I am an interior designer I get to purchase home furnishings for myself and all my clients!  I am in love with the blankets and throws from Brahms Mount Mills in Maine.  Their blankets, throws and linen towels are woven on antique shuttle looms by local artisans in their mill in Monmouth, Maine.  Go to Brahms for store locators or to order online. I have purchased several of these herringbone throws.  Every home should have a Brahms Mount Throw!Brahms Mount

One of the most important purchases any of us can make is our bed!  I am in love with the Beauty Rest mattress manufactured by Simmons in Agawam, Massachusetts.  Quality, comfort and the pillow top is like sleeping on a cloud!

One of the reasons I started this blog was my frustration with finding quality bed linens, blankets, comforters and throws that would not wear out in a year or less!  American Made Home started in 2011 from a similar response for quality, durable dorm and home bedding supplies!  American Home  is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky with mills and suppliers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, and Massachusetts.  I can tell you that for a ready made product the quality and workmanship cannot be beat.  I have been very happy with everything I have purchased from this company!  Here is a simple guest room I did for a client.

Simon Pearce out of Quichee, Vermont makes all things tabletop including glassware, dishes, and pottery to name a few.  I love the fact that their pieces are elegant, made in USA, high quality and the glass and crystal are lead free.  I started my collection of the stemware pattern Royalton.  Here are the champagne stems I purchased:

The Maine Float Rope Company makes Down East Doormats that are handmade on the coast of Maine using reclaimed float-rope.  They are hand-woven by fishing families and others year round.  These super-durable mats are virtually indestructible. SMALL, FUN & NECESSARY…. Just a few products that I purchased in multiple quantities last year since I love the companies and am a big fan of their products.

The Naked Bee makes a luxurious line of hand creams, body butters and tons of other personal care products with “all the good stuff and none of the bad stuff.” I am in love with their ultra-rich body butter in Orange Blossom Honey.

Buddy Biscuits by Cloud Star come in several flavors and are a big hit with all the dogs in my life!  I gifted the gingerbread flavor to all my pups for Christmas.  Check out their website for all kinds of goodies all safe and made in USA.

Cloud Star

I didn’t touch on all the Made in America products I purchased in 2013 but I think this list gives you an idea of the breadth of quality, stylish, Made in USA products that are out there for all of us to consider.  Best wishes to everyone for a happy, healthy New Year and as always Happy Stylish Shopping Made in the USA!!  Linda

Brahms Mount Luxury Textiles – Made in Maine.

Brahms Mount,

I have a special place in my heart for the state of Maine.  It’s where my family roots are and where I obtained my lifelong respect for our land, water, and air.  As a child I spent many summers on my Aunts farm in Presque Isle where I helped her pick all the fresh (and naturally organic) vegetables for our meals.  I still recall those lunches and dinners as the most delicious and gourmet that I have ever eaten.  I also love Acadia National Park in Mount Desert Island where the refreshing Atlantic water views and crisp air make it one of the most peaceful places I know.  Belgrade Lakes is another favorite destination with its Great Pond views and where the mail boat is one of the few remaining delivering mail to the cottages along the shore line.

Brahms Mount

On a recent trip to Maine I had the opportunity to visit and learn more about Brahms Mount textiles.   They design, manufacture and distribute a luxurious line of blankets, throws, linen towels, and baby blankets right in Maine. Of course any products I write about have to be both stylish and Made in the USA but this particular product line for me evokes an additional element…the essence of Maine….a feeling of comfort, nurture, simplicity and quality all wrapped up in a blanket…much like the blankets and quilts my Aunt had on her farm in northern Maine…they last forever and just get better with age.

The welcoming folks at Brahms Mount kindly gave me a tour of their Mill in Monmouth, Maine and then I hopped in the car for a trip down to Freeport where President and Owner, David Kaufman showed me around their beautiful store.  David has such a passion for the entire product line that it is no wonder how the company has been able the grow and thrive.  First  lets take a look at Brahms Mount Mill.  If you are not familiar with weaving just keep in mind that the weft is the horizontal thread and the warp is the vertical thread.

Here we are at Brahms Mount Mill!  Lets start with the Yarn which hangs on a CREEL seen here.

I can tell you from personal experience that I have been  disappointed too many times with the poor quality of comforters, throw pillows, and linens purchased from the big box “value” stores…the stitching comes apart, they fad, and look worn out in less than a year!   I like my sheets and bed linens to get softer and nicer with a little age not ready for the trash.  If you feel this way too then you need to check out the high quality and  fashion forward styles of  the American Made Dorm and Home product line.

Double Rachel Sconce in International Lifesaving Orange.

The design duo of Dunes -Michael Partenio and Duchess – Stacy Kunstel found inspiration for their designs from such items as a French antique turned style chandelier they discovered years ago… as you will see, wood turning and spindle style are design motifs emblematic of the Dunes & Duchess products.  Other inspirations… the charming old hitching posts still seen around New England if you look really hard!

Simon Pearce glass and pottery made in Vermont & Maryland

Simon Pearce, www.stylemadeinusa.wordpress.comSimon Pearce Inc, the large and thriving glass, pottery, and home accents company with retail stores throughout the USA was started by the man himself – Simon Pearce.  Mr Pearce gained his glassblowing and pottery skills first in Kilkenny Ireland and then at the Royal College of Art in London.  In 1981 he came to Quechee, Vermont where he renovated and restored a historic woolen mill and established Simon Pearce Inc. USA.   The Ottauquechee River provides the hydroelectric power for the glass furnaces as well as the electricity for the entire facility.  Today Simon Pearce has three glassblowing and pottery facilities in:  Windsor, Vermont;  Quechee, Vermont and  Mt Lake Park, Maryland (glassblowing only).  All sites have a visitor observation area to see the artisans at work!

Quechee, Vermont

Quechee, Vermont

Simon PearceHere is Nathan one of the glassblowers  in the Quechee Vermont  studio making  stemware.  He makes about 9 wine glasses an hour.   Nathan has been working as a glassblower for nine years and his Dad, Nathan Sr (not in photos) is a Master glassblower who has worked at Simon Pearce for eighteen years!

And upstairs in the retail shop are the finished stemware designs on display

Simon Pearce, stemware

This is the Royalton Collection and my new favorite stemware!  I really love the quilted design and the size of the pieces.  I started collecting the champagne flutes on the day of this visit and plan on pairing  them with some  colored vintage wine stems I have had for years.   Oh and all of Simon Pearce glass is LEAD FREE which is really good for both the consumer and the environment.   I own lead crystal stemware and the weight, color and clarity of Simon Pearce pieces are  just as beautiful.

Next I want to show you a sampling of their pendant lighting.  I would love to use one of these designs in an upcoming interior design project…maybe 2-3 of the same design over a kitchen island!

As stated in the Simon Pearce website “Simon’s vision has always been to create products that are beautifully designed, produced with premium quality materials and time honored techniques intended for a lifetime of everyday use.”

I love  the designs and the neutral, elegant hues of the pottery collections.  Below is the Woodbury Collection – it comes in both round and square dinnerware so you can mix it up.

Want to breath new life into your everyday dinnerware?  Add a few of these oval serving pieces, all part of the Barre Collection.  That generous creamer in the front would work great with any morning coffee ritual!

So before you make the regular “Barrel or Barn” run, consider Simon Pearce first.  Whether you need a gift, or want to add to your own stemware, barware, or dinnerware needs, the quality and style at Simon Pearce are second to none and all Made in the USA!  For more information, store locators, or to order online go to:
